24hrs in Amsterdam

Amsterdam

So let’s say you have a long layover or you’re hitting up multiple cities in Europe, and you only have 24hrs, or less, in Amsterdam. What can you do in 24hrs? Is it enough time? First things first, 24hrs is never enough time, unless you’re Beyonce. But it’s definitely possible to cover quite a bit in this city, if you plan it out right or keep reading below. I’ve traveled to Amsterdam on 3 separate occasions and have spent anywhere between 7-48hrs there. Everytime I go back, I find more and more places to enjoy. Sometimes enjoying a new place doesn’t come with as much time as we would like, but the point is to make the most of it! Check out my ultimate travel guide for 24hrs in Amsterdam!

Morning

The Travel Jawn - Amsterdam

  • Hit the ground running: Literally. You will most likely be traveling into Amsterdam by train, either from the airport or from another city. The train system is extremely easy to navigate, the signs and directions are in Dutch, as well as English. You’ll take the train into the main train station, Amsterdam Centraal.

  • Before you leave the airport, check out the “Visitor Centre” for day transport train passes, activity and museum passes. Fret not, if there’s a long line or you just want to be on your way, there’s an opportunity to get passes in the city, in Museumplein.

  • Amsterdam sign: If you’ve ever googled Amsterdam, you most likely came across the famous ‘I Amsterdam” sign. As of recent, it’s been removed from its site in Museumplein, due to over tourism

  • Check in: If you’re staying for 24hrs you’ll definitely want to find accommodations near the train station. There are great hotels and hostels right at your fingertips. Of course, I opted for a hostel, St. Christopher’s at the Winston, and it was less than a 5 minute walk from the train station, near the infamous Red Light District.

  • Breakfast: There are so many restaurants and cafes (not coffee shops, I’ll get there) near the main square. Stumble upon one that calls your name, sit or get something to go and enjoy. Try a stroopwafel, a Dutch baked good, it’s a must!

  • Rent a bike or walk around: Time to get out and see Amsterdam! Set some time aside to just wander the streets and get a feel of the culture. This is a perfect time to do a little shopping!

Afternoon

  • Museum(s) and/or Heineken Experience: It’s early afternoon and it’s a great time to pop into one of the museums nearby. Whether you like history (Rijksmuseum or Van Gough) or modern pop art (MOCO Museum), Amsterdam has something for you. I chose to go to MOCO because I felt like it would be the most entertaining for me, and it was worth the visit! You could also check out the Heineken factory and indulge yourself with the Dutch made beer brand. Check out: Amsterdam Tourism site.

  • Lunch: I am very much a foodie and will always indulge on a vacay, but feel free to keep it moving if you’re not.

  • Bike ride or walk around through the parks: Amsterdam’s cobblestone streets, historic architecture and canal filled streets is unlike many places. These neighborhoods are some of the most picturesque I’ve seen in my travels. Take some time to marvel at them for a bit.

Evening

A’Dam Lookout is a rooftop bar/lounge

A’Dam Lookout is a rooftop bar/lounge

  • Take the ferry to the A’Dam Lookout: Head across the canal to the one of the highest points in the city. There’s a bar, attractions and even a swing at the top of the lookout, that swings you over the canal.

  • Dinner: If you’re still in the city, then head out to get some eats! Try Blauwe Draak, it served great Asian fusion dishes and the atmosphere was super trendy. I have also been to Bird, for some damn good Thai food.

Late Night

  • Hit a “coffee shop”: I’m not talking about Dunkin or Starbucks, coffee shops are special to Amsterdam because they sell weed and weed infused delicacies. If you indulge, you’ll be like a kid in a candy store. Try First Bulldog, Dampkring, or Easy Times.

  • The Red Light District: Some of the coffee shops I listed are in or around the Red Light District. You wouldn’t really be able to tell you were in the RLD, during the day, but at night, it comes alive. Just an FYI: sex work is legal in Holland.

  • Hit a bar/lounge: Everyone knows clubbin’ is better overseas, usually. So go out, and enjoy the night. Try Supper Club.

Next Morning

  • The morning after: If you’re still here, the time has come to get up and check out. Grab some last minute souvenirs and hit the road. Take breakfast to go and wave good-bye to Amsterdam. Time to hit your next destination.
